About
Light on Cooking is an evolving cookbook and oral history project rooted in the living tradition of Iyengar Yoga. Through ongoing conversations with members of the Iyengar family and longtime practitioners, the project is gathering traditional recipes alongside the stories, practices, and daily rhythms that surround them.
More than a collection of recipes, this work seeks to document how food, discipline, and devotion are woven into the fabric of the tradition. As it continues to unfold, it aims to preserve a cultural dimension of Iyengar Yoga that has largely been shared through lived experience—offering a glimpse into the kitchens, homes, and relationships that have nourished generations of practitioners.
Vanita and Savita
In this episode of On the Light—where the idea for Light on Cooking first took shape—I had the honor of speaking with two of Guruji’s daughters: Vanita, the second eldest (on the right), and Savita, the youngest. It was a truly special conversation, and I was deeply moved by their warmth and generosity in sharing their time and stories. With grace and joy, they reflected on their parents’ lives, the profound role Geetaji played within the family, Savita’s journey in dance, their connection to music, and so much more.
